Character Name: Hyoudou Shinsuke
Character Canon: Sengoku Youko
Canon point: Inbetween Part 1 and Part 2
Background: In Japan during the 1600s, humans and demons live side by side in the real world, yet they do not get along at all. Humans fear demons, for many demons make a habit of eating humans, but demons fear humans, for humans are far more numerous and unpredictable. In this world, the cowardly swordsman Hyoudou Shinsuke meets up with Tama, the Demon that loves humans and her adopted brother Jinka, the human that loves demons. Tama travels the land, preaching peace, understanding, and brotherhood between all living things, be they Demon or Human. Together, the three of them go on fantasy adventures! Friends are made! Evil is confronted! Personal insight is discovered!
Abilities: Shinsuke is an average swordsman at best when it comes to technique, but he makes up for it with good instincts and and spirit. He fights with the magic sword Maken Arabuki, which lets him shoot blasts of wind at people and fly.
Personality: Shinsuke is not what you'd normally call hero material. He's a bit of a coward, he probably drinks more than is healthy, he can get lost in visions of his own (imagined) fame and notoriety, and he can seriously lose his temper when things get too personal. But despite his flaws, he isn't content to just be another nobody, so he pushes himself to be great in whatever ways he can.
Because he does want to be great. He was born of the very lowest class in feudal japanese society, and in a poor family. He hated being weak, and he hates people who sing praises to poverty, humility and weakness. He doesn't hate people who are weak, poor, or humble. He feels bad for them, because in the real world they will get walked all over by the strong, rich, and forceful. This has led him to be stubbornly focused on gaining enough strength that he can't be pushed around.
Shinsuke tends to let his ego get carried away whenever things start to go his way. He tends to start imagining himself as a larger than life figure of legend. Sometimes at the expense of paying attention to the outside world. He gets smug and generally annoying. However his obliviousness in this state tends to make it easy to deflate him, just by pointing out that you've noticed him being an idiot.
His sword, while definitely a magic sword, does not have a personality of his own. Rather, Shinsuke made up a personality for it, as it helps him understand his connection with it more easily. In Shinsuke's mind, Maken Arabuki is short sighted, arrogant, violent, but also confident, decisive and in balance with itself. In short, Arabuki is simultaneously the voice of what he hates about the world and the voice of ideals he aspires to.
Shinsuke has started drinking more than is probably healthy since Shakugan "died" just as he realized he may have been starting to fall in love with her. Her sacrifice has destabilized him more than he cares to admit. He's more prone to violent outbursts and less likely to forgive people. However, he's also lost a fair amount of the childishness and indeciciveness he had before.
